With nine students and four staff, the University of Tennessee was well represented at the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education’s (AASHE) annual conference this year in Portland, OR. The three day conference covered a wide range of sustainability topics over three days from energy management to waste diversion to student activism with presenters from universities across the country. Many renowned speakers, including Annie Leonard, gave keynote addresses that left attendees ready to be the change they hope to see at their institutions. The UT crew came back to campus with new ideas and enthusiasm pertaining to campus sustainability. Students applied for funding for the conference through the Green Fee which has set aside $25,000 a year for student conferences pertaining to sustainability. Money has been set aside in order for students to attend conferences and bring what they learned back to campus in order to make UT a more sustainable place.
