Arbor Day Tree Planting
March 3 @ 10:00 am - 3:00 pm| Free
The first Friday in March is Tennessee’s Arbor Day, primarily because it’s on e of the best times to plant trees in our region! After the success of our tree planting last year, we’re partnering with UT Knoxville’s Facilities Services Stormwater Management, Landscape Services, and Recycling, as well as the local nonprofit Trees Knoxville to fully take advantage of the day this year by planting 1000 trees on Friday, March 3rd, along Second Creek here on campus. There will be two work shifts (10 AM to 1 PM and noon to 3 PM). Lunch will be provided.

This tree planting is a part of the greater Second Creek Riparian Restoration Project that is ongoing. The project aims to clear out invasive species along the banks of the creek and replace them with native species that will thrive in the area. The banks of Second Creek have seen a lot of damage thanks to invasive speices, whose shallow root systems simply can’t keep up with stormwater erosion. The native species, with their deeper roots, will be more efficient in stabilizing banks and improving water quality in this creek as well as the other streams and rivers in the area. Not to mention the other benefits that these trees will provide by way of air quality, shade, and carbon sequestration. For more information on last year’s tree planting – go here.
